Thomas Earl - bio/background
Thomas Earl's musical journey began growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and playing in coffeehouses with then unknown and aspiring musicians such as Joni Mitchell, John Hammond, Jim Kweskin and Maria Muldaur. He continued performing and writing, working both as a solo artist and with various folk, bluegrass and jugband groups. He served as both performer and concert promoter as he produced live music events in Michigan and Ohio. His music took him throughout the Midwest and to Europe, including writing music for a theatrical production tribute to the poet Langston Hughes. In the 1970s, along with a number of folk artists, he began a migration into rock and roll. His experiences included a brief brush with commercial success in a group called "The Woolies", releasing a cover of "Who do you Love?", as well as working in a group called, "The James K. Polk Memorial Rock Band", who released a rock version of Jessie Collin Young's "Four in the Morning". As with many struggling musicians who grow into their twenties, Thomas ended up leaving the music industry and moving into a more traditional career in the corporate world. He always continued playing, performing, and writing music whenever he had the opportunity.
Three years ago, Thomas became re-inspired to begin focusing again on his music. His new CD, Golddust Magic, contains 11 of Thomas' original new songs. The CD was produced by Scott Sharrard and Sean Dixon and co-produced by Joe Johnson at Gatehouse Studios and Red Wally studios in Cold Spring, New York. These songs reflect a culmination of several decades of musical influences. As you listen to the music you may hear elements of artists ranging from Crosby, Stills and Nash and James Taylor, to Tom Rush and Gordon Lightfoot, to contemporary artists such as Jack Johnson, Amos Lee or Lucinda Williams. Thomas, as most musicians, doesn't like categorical boxes people try to place them in, but his music tends to drift between folk/rock and alt/ country...all with a natural acoustic instrument approach.
